Like the horns of a white cow, the crescent moon curves delicately around space that is black and hollow, yet fecund with the promise of light to come as the moon swells into fullness. The word crescent is from Latin crescent, to increase; thus the crescent as new moon was a time to make wishes, plant seeds and turn over silver coins in one’s pocket.
